Case Western Reserve University (Case Western) recently partnered with My Home Park to revive the neglected outdoor spaces of the plaza behind the Museum of Contemporary Art. This collaboration helped revitalize the landscapes and set a noteworthy example for eco-friendly and sustainable transformations.
Nestled in the vibrant urban setting of Cleveland, Ohio, Case Western is among the nation’s leading research institutions. It is situated in the world's most culturally rich square miles, surrounded by iconic landmarks like the Cleveland Museum of Art and Severance Hall, Cleveland Museum of Natural History, Cleveland Botanical Gardens, and the Cleveland Institute of Music and Cleveland Institute of Art.

Putting Nature Back to Urban Spaces Using Native Plants
Case Western manages a heavily trafficked plaza tucked behind the Museum of Contemporary Art that boasts an 8,200 square feet area of softscape ground. The stage was set in 2019 when Tony Asset’s sculpture “Judy’s Hand Pavillion” added a touch of artistic flair to the urban setting.
However, the lively appearance of the plaza took a hit during the challenging years of 2020 through 2022. The original plantings fell victim to neglect due to labor shortages during COVID. The university’s new Facility Manager recognized the need for a swift restoration and took charge of transforming the neglected area into a lush urban space.
In September 2023, Case Western tapped into the expertise of My Home Park and requested a quick action plan on the landscape restoration. Responding promptly, the team designed a solution perfectly aligned with the university's vision and commitment to eco-friendly practices. The design was approved by October 5, 2023, kicking off a speedy transformation.
Quick Action, Big Impact
Leveraging their extensive knowledge of native species, My Home Park developed a landscape design that perfectly balances stability and diversity for a year-long visual appeal. They selected all native plants and sourced them within a mere two weeks to fit the stringent timelines. Under the guidance and experience of Wyatt Shell and David, every one of the 5,200 plants found its perfect spot. Exscape Landscaping executed the massive project in just three days, wrapping up the success story on October 31, 2023.
The Native Advantage
Understanding the demands of the busy university campus, My Home Park designed the landscape with sustainability and low maintenance in mind. Spacing the native grasses and flowering plants at one-foot intervals ensured a neat layout and established a natural barrier against weeds, reducing the need for constant upkeep. Additionally, the layered effect, featuring five levels of grasses, sedges, and forbs, added depth to the landscape but also minimized the maintenance efforts.
Towering native grasses, reaching an impressive six feet in height, were strategically planted to serve a dual purpose- conceal an adjacent dumpster for practicality and maintain an aesthetic continuity. To add pops of color without overshadowing the focal sculpture, My Home Park strategically placed drifts of native flowering plants. The outcome is a visually captivating garden that adds charm to the campus without adding to the workload.
