Sweet Joe Pye Weed
Sweet Joe Pye Weed (Eutrochium purpureum) is a tall, shade-tolerant native perennial that brings height, fragrance, and pollinator power to woodland gardens and moist, partly shaded landscapes.
Reaching up to 7 feet tall, Sweet Joe Pye Weed produces large, vanilla-scented clusters of fuzzy pink flowers in late summer, just when many pollinators are most active. Butterflies flock to the blooms, making this plant a late-season nectar magnet. Despite its stature, it typically stays upright when supported by neighboring tall plants. If you'd like a more compact form, simply cut back by half in early summer—a great way to manage height without sacrificing blooms.
This long-lived perennial will slowly expand to form a robust clump and can be divided every few years to control its spread or share with friends.
Why Choose Sweet Joe Pye Weed?
- Shade-tolerant – Unlike many Joe Pye species, thrives in part shade.
- Fragrant, pollinator-rich blooms – Draws in butterflies & bees in late summer.
- Tall & structural – Adds vertical interest to woodland or rain gardens.
Plant Sweet Joe Pye Weed in moist, partly shaded areas for a dramatic, fragrant, and ecologically valuable native that returns year after year.
- Height can be reduced safely via the "Chelsea Chop" - cutting stems roughly in half in very early summer.
- Consider staking taller stems if they begin to lean in later summer
- Plants eventually will feature a dead center portion of their base - this is the ideal time to dig up the root ball to divide the plant and replant live roots.
