Allegheny Monkeyflower
Mimulus ringens
Monkeyflower has a special relationship with bumblebees. These uniquely shaped flowers are shut tight, allowing only the strongest bees (like bumblebees) to access the nectar inside. For the bumblebees, this means extra nectar and less competition from other kinds of bees. The advantage for the monkeyflower is that the bumblebees visit other monkeyflowers more often, making successful pollination more likely. Monkeyflower occurs naturally in wet habitats. In your garden, it can handle wet and average soils.
