Aromatic Aster
Symphyotrichum oblongifolium
One of the showiest asters around, Aromatic Aster grows into a dense low mound. In the late summer, the plant turns from green to purple as it is completely carpeted in small daisy-like flowers. A very long bloomer, these flowers can hold on until the first frosts. Aromatic Aster can spread into open areas of the garden, so pull seedlings if you want to keep it in place. Once the other plants in the garden fill it, Aromatic Aster should not outcompete them. Can develop leaf disease if placed in a poorly-drained spot.
