Bladderpod

Bladderpod is a tough, character-filled shrub that brings color and wildlife activity to the landscape across an unusually long season. Bright yellow flowers gather in loose clusters at the tips of its branches, standing out against blue-green, divided foliage. The blooms are followed by rounded, papery seed pods that resemble small hanging lanterns, giving the plant sculptural interest even between flowering cycles. Its foliage also releases a distinctive aroma when brushed or crushed.

Native to coastal scrub, grasslands, slopes, and desert-edge habitats of Southern California and Baja California, Bladderpod is well equipped for intense sun, lean soil, wind, and seasonal drought. Its flowers support butterflies, hummingbirds, and a broad range of other pollinators, making this substantial shrub particularly useful in habitat gardens and native hedgerows.

Bladderpod typically develops into a dense, rounded shrub approximately 4 feet tall and wide, although its ultimate size varies with climate, soil, and available moisture. It works beautifully as an informal screen, erosion-control planting, wildlife-garden anchor, or durable accent for exposed slopes. Evergreen foliage and persistent pods provide year-round structure, while supplemental summer water can encourage fuller growth when drainage is good.
