Desert Marigold
Bailea multiradiata
Desert Marigold is a true champion of arid landscapes, offering vibrant daisy-like flowers in cheerful shades of yellow from spring through fall. Standing on slender stems above a mound of silvery-gray, woolly foliage, these blooms attract native bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects in regions where options can be scarce.
Perfect for xeriscaping and low-maintenance beds, Desert Marigold thrives in full sun and poor, fast-draining soils. It’s native to the American Southwest and Mexico, where it flourishes in deserts, open plains, and rocky washes. This short-lived perennial (often grown as an annual or biennial) reseeds itself readily, forming attractive colonies over time without becoming unruly.

Maintenance Tips
- Watering: Very drought-tolerant once established. Avoid supplemental water except during prolonged drought in establishment phase.
- Soil Needs: Demands excellent drainage. Avoid clay or overly rich soils.
- Deadheading: Regular deadheading prolongs bloom and maintains a tidy appearance.
- Lifespan: Short-lived but self-sows in favorable conditions. Allow seedheads to mature if reseeding is desired.
- Pruning: Cut back spent flower stalks or leggy growth to encourage new flushes.
