Eastern Redbud
Cercis canadensis
Eastern Redbud is a beautiful small to medium-sized tree that can reach heights of 20 to 30 feet. It features a rounded crown and heart-shaped leaves that emerge after its flowers have finished blooming. In early spring, before the foliage appears, its branches erupt in a vibrant coat of pink to light purple flowers that attract pollinators and delight the eye. These flowers are not only visually appealing but also edible, and can add a splash of seasonal color to salads and desserts. Eastern Redbud thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained soils, making it an excellent choice for garden borders, naturalized areas, and as an understory tree in larger landscapes.

- Prune in late winter or early spring to remove any dead or crossing branches and to maintain shape.
- Prefers well-drained, fertile soil but is adaptable to a variety of soil conditions.
- Apply a layer of mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
- Monitor for signs of pests or diseases, such as canker or verticillium wilt, and manage as needed.
