Goldie's Wood Fern

Goldie's Wood Fern brings an almost architectural presence to the woodland garden. Large, broadly arching fronds emerge from a slowly enlarging crown and can reach three to four feet tall, producing considerably more visual weight than many familiar native ferns.

Naturally found in rich, moist forests and seepage areas, it grows best in partial to full shade with humus-rich soil and reliable moisture. A short creeping rhizome allows established plants to gradually develop into impressive clumps, while deer and rabbits generally leave the foliage alone. Kew currently accepts the spelling Dryopteris goldieana, although D. goldiana remains in use by some authorities.

• Plant in humus-rich medium to moist soil protected from hot afternoon sun and drying winds.
• Avoid unnecessary transplanting once mature, and remove old fronds in late winter if desired.
