Heartleaf Alexanders
Zizia aptera
Full sun meadows and prairies are later to put on spring blooms than woodlands, but Heartleaf Alexanders are there to break winter's spell. Their flowers resemble a yellow Queen Anne's lace. These shallow blooms can feed small and large pollinators alike, and their nectar and pollen is an important spring food source in the garden. Even though the blooms fade before summer, they are an attractive plant through the season. Their large, glossy leaves make an attractive groundcover. A host plant for black swallowtail butterflies!
