Hoary Vervain
Verbena stricta
Hoary Vervain is a denizen of dry prairies and rocky soils, and this drought tolerant plant does best in poor soils. This upright plant is covered in a fine fuzz that turns the foliage an interesting pale gray green. In early summer, it produces a ring of intensely-lavender flowers that move slowly up green flower stalks. The shallow flowers are attractive to many kinds of pollinators. Leave a bit of exposed soil around the base of this plant so it can self-sow and persist in the garden.
