Large-Flowered Bellwort

Uvularia grandiflora

Large-Flowered Bellwort is a charming perennial that thrives under the canopy of deciduous forests. It typically grows 1 to 2 feet tall, with distinctive, arching stems that give the plant a nodding appearance. The leaves are perfoliate, meaning they appear to be pierced by the stem, adding to the plant's unique architectural look. In early to mid-spring, large, pendulous yellow flowers emerge, each shaped like a bell hanging from the stem tips. These flowers are not only beautiful but also attract pollinators such as bees. After flowering, the plant forms seed capsules that provide interest into the summer. Large-Flowered Bellwort prefers rich, moist, well-drained soil and partial shade, making it ideal for woodland gardens, naturalized areas, or as an understory plant in shaded borders.

Ecological Benefits

Maintenance Tips

  • Prefers consistently moist soil; water regularly to maintain moisture, especially in dry conditions.
  • Generally requires little pruning. Remove old foliage in late winter or early spring before new growth begins to keep the plant looking tidy.
  • Thrives in humus-rich, well-drained soils. Amend with organic matter to improve soil fertility and structure.
  • Apply a layer of organic mulch to conserve soil moisture, suppress weeds, and provide a clean appearance.
  • Monitor for pests and diseases, though it is generally low-maintenance and disease-resistant. Protect from late spring frosts in its first year, that may damage early spring growth.
