Little Joe Pye Weed

Little Joe offers the ecological activity and bold summer flowering of Joe Pye weed at a much more manageable three to four feet tall. Domed clusters of dusty mauve-purple flowers rise over sturdy foliage in midsummer and continue into early fall, providing a reliable nectar source during the height of butterfly season.

As a cultivar of native Eutrochium dubium, ‘Little Joe’ remains especially well suited to rain gardens, moist borders, low areas, and ordinary garden beds that do not become excessively dry. The species provides nectar for numerous insects and hummingbirds, while its seeds can feed birds later in the year. Its compact stature makes those benefits far easier to integrate into residential landscapes.

• Provide medium to moist soil and avoid allowing young plants to dry severely.
• Cut old stems to the ground in late winter or early spring.
• Established clumps can be divided if they eventually become too broad.
