Narrow-Leaved Cattail Sedge
Carex squarrosa
Narrow-Leaved Cattail Sedge is denizen of wetlands, where it feeds a wide variety of wildlife including caterpillars, beetles, ducks and turtles. Broad, arching leaves grow to around two feet tall. In summer, the plants form seedheads resembling miniature green pinecones. This sedge needs moist conditions and can even tolerate standing water if it's temporary. The foliage may die back in summer if the soil dries out, but it should regrow in fall.
