Nodding Fescue
Festuca subverticillata
Nodding Fescue is a cool-season perennial grass that thrives in the dappled shade of woodland settings. This grass typically grows up to 2 to 3 feet in height and forms clumps of narrow, soft green leaves that tend to nod or arch gracefully. In late spring to early summer, it produces delicate, nodding flower spikes that are greenish-blue in color, adding a subtle textural contrast to the garden. Nodding Fescue is valued for its adaptability to shady conditions where many grasses may struggle, making it ideal for underplanting in forested areas, stabilizing soil on shaded slopes, or filling out shaded garden beds.

Maintenance Tips
- Prefers consistently moist soil; water regularly, especially in dry conditions, to maintain soil moisture.
- Cut back foliage in early spring to remove any dead material and encourage fresh growth.
- Thrives in moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter; tolerates a range of soil types but performs best in slightly acidic to neutral soils.
- Apply a light layer of organic mulch to conserve moisture and suppress weeds without smothering the plant.
- Monitor for signs of rust or fungal diseases, especially in humid conditions, and manage appropriately to maintain plant health.
