Pineywoods Dropseed
Sporobolus junceus
Pineywoods Dropseed is a warm-season perennial grass native to the Southeastern U.S., thriving in sandy, acidic, and nutrient-poor soils where few others will persist. Forming neat, fountain-like clumps about 1–3 feet tall, its narrow, rolled leaves give a tidy, upright appearance that blends seamlessly into naturalistic designs or restoration plantings. By late summer, airy panicles rise above the foliage, casting a soft golden glow and producing seed that feeds sparrows and other small birds. Unlike more aggressive grasses, this one behaves politely in mixed plantings and is valuable in longleaf pine ecosystems and dry prairie reconstructions. It’s also drought-tolerant once established and provides year-round structure.
