Pink Evening Primrose

Oenothera speciosa

Pink Evening Primrose brings soft color and an easygoing, meadow-like character to sunny gardens. Its broad, cup-shaped flowers open white to blush pink, often deepening toward the center with delicate veins and bright yellow stamens. Blooms may open in the evening or morning and remain attractive into the day, creating a luminous display above low, spreading foliage.

Native across much of the central and southern United States, this resilient perennial grows naturally in prairies, open fields, roadsides, and other sunny habitats. Its flowers provide nectar and pollen for native bees, butterflies, hawk moths, and other beneficial insects. The foliage also serves as food for the caterpillars of several native moths, extending its ecological value beyond the bloom season.

Pink Evening Primrose typically grows 8–18 inches tall and spreads through underground rhizomes to form broad colonies. This vigorous habit makes it especially effective on slopes, in informal borders, along driveways, and in naturalized plantings where it has room to wander. It may spread too enthusiastically for small or highly formal beds, so thoughtful placement is important.

Ecological Benefits

Maintenance Tips

  • Plant Pink Evening Primrose where its spreading habit can be accommodated, as underground rhizomes may carry it beyond the original planting area.
  • Remove wandering shoots or install edging to contain it, and cut back untidy foliage after flowering to encourage fresh growth.
  • Avoid rich fertilizer and excessive watering which can make plants more aggressive.
