Prairie Smoke
Geum triflorum
Prairie Smoke is a short-statured standout, offering a unique mix of textures with its unusual flowers and feathery seed heads. In late spring, it produces nodding, pinkish-purple flowers that resemble small lanterns on slender stems. After flowering, the seed heads develop into soft, plume-like clusters, creating a mist-like effect that dances in the breeze and lends the plant its name. Growing up to 18 inches in height, prairie smoke will grow to form a low mat of fern-like leaves, providing an attractive groundcover.
