Pussy Willow
Salix discolor
Pussy Willow is a deciduous shrub or small tree that grows up to 15 feet tall. It is especially notable for its fuzzy, gray catkins that appear on bare branches before the leaves emerge. These catkins are actually flowers, and when they open, they reveal bright yellow pollen that attracts early pollinators. Pussy Willow is an excellent choice for naturalized areas, wetland edges, and wildlife gardens, as it thrives in moist, well-drained soil and full sun to partial shade. Its ability to tolerate wet conditions makes it useful for erosion control and stabilizing stream banks.

Maintenance Tips
- Prefers moist conditions but can tolerate occasional dryness once established.
- Prune after flowering to shape the plant and encourage more vigorous growth and better catkin production next season.
- Grows best in well-drained, moist soils but is adaptable to a variety of soil types.
- Apply a layer of mulch to conserve soil moisture and reduce weed competition.
- Monitor for pests such as aphids and diseases like willow scab or blight, especially in humid conditions.
