Red Maple
Acer rubrum
Red maple is a versatile and fast-growing tree that can reach heights of up to 40-70 feet, depending on the growing conditions. It features a rounded to oval crown and produces small red flowers in early spring, which are among the first signs of seasonal change in many areas. These flowers give way to red fruit, called samaras, that support birds and squirrels. The tree's most striking feature is its brilliant red fall foliage, which makes it a standout in any landscape. Acer rubrum is adaptable to a variety of soil types, although it prefers moist, slightly acidic conditions. It is often used in urban and suburban settings due to its tolerance of pollution and compact root system.

Maintenance Tips
- Regular watering is important during the first few years after planting to establish a deep, extensive root system. Mature trees are relatively drought-tolerant.
- Prune in late winter or early spring to remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches and to maintain shape.
- Prefers slightly acidic, moist, well-drained soils but is adaptable to many different soil conditions, including wet soils.
- pply a layer of mulch around the base of the tree to retain soil moisture and regulate soil temperature if needed. Not usually required on well-established trees.
- Monitor for pests such as aphids and scale insects, as well as diseases like leaf spot and verticillium wilt. Treat as necessary to maintain the health of the tree.
