Short's Sedge
Carex shortiana
Short's Sedge is a perennial that thrives in moist woodland settings where it forms dense tufts of fine, green foliage that can grow up to 18 to 24 inches tall. In the spring, it produces light green to brown flower spikes that gracefully arch above the foliage. These spikes add subtle interest to any garden and are important for local ecosystems, providing food for insects and cover for small animals. Short's Sedge is ideal for shade gardens, rain gardens, and along the edges of wooded areas, where it helps prevent erosion and maintains ecological balance.

Maintenance Tips
- Prefers consistent moisture but is somewhat drought-tolerant once established; water regularly in dry conditions.
- Cut back in late winter before new growth starts to tidy up the plant and encourage fresh foliage.
- Thrives in moist, well-drained soil; can adapt to a variety of soil types, from loamy to clay.
- Apply a light layer of organic mulch to help retain soil moisture and suppress weeds without smothering the plant.
- Check for pests and diseases occasionally, though Short's sedge is typically robust and low-maintenance in appropriate conditions.
