Showy Penstemon

Showy Penstemon earns its name each spring when upright stems erupt in dense spikes of saturated violet-blue flowers that seem to glow against dry soils. Native to Southern California and Baja, this perennial is a cornerstone species of coastal sage scrub and chaparral habitats, bringing both color and wildlife activity to open landscapes.

Blooming from late winter into spring, its tubular flowers are perfectly shaped for hummingbirds, which return again and again during peak bloom. Native bees—especially large solitary bees—also rely on its nectar early in the season when floral resources are limited. The glossy, deep green leaves form a neat basal clump that remains attractive after flowering, providing structure even as the blooms fade.

Showy Penstemon typically grows 2–4 feet tall and wide and performs best on slopes, in rock gardens, or mixed into dry borders. Once established, it is highly drought-tolerant and long-lived when planted in lean, well-drained soils.
