Sideoats Grama
Bouteloua curtipendula
Sideoats Grama is a short grass, growing to just 2 or 3 feet tall. In summer, its small, attractive flowers hang off flowering stalks. They're quite beautiful close up, and from a distance they give the flower stalks an orange haze. The flowers develop into unique, oat-like seeds that birds relish. Having evolved in the dry shortgrass prairie it does best in dry or average soils and is not recommended for clay soils in areas receiving more than 20 inches of annual rainfall. Sideoats Grama is a nice companion grass for shorter flowers as it will not outcompete them.
