Silver Bush Lupine

Lupinus albifrons

Silver Bush Lupine is a signature shrub of California’s coastal and inland drylands, instantly recognizable by its soft, silver-gray leaves and upright spires of blue to purple flowers. Blooming in spring and early summer, these flower spikes rise above the foliage and draw a steady stream of native bees, bumblebees, and butterflies, making the plant hum with activity during its peak season.

Beyond its beauty, Silver Bush Lupine plays a vital ecological role as a nitrogen fixer, enriching poor soils and helping nearby plants establish and thrive. Its fuzzy leaves reflect sunlight and reduce moisture loss, allowing it to flourish in hot, exposed sites with little water. Over time, it forms a rounded, woody shrub 3–6 feet tall and wide, providing structure and habitat in native plantings.

This species is particularly well suited to coastal sage scrub, chaparral-inspired gardens, slopes, and restoration sites. While short-lived compared to some shrubs, it often reseeds nearby, allowing new plants to take its place and maintain continuity in the landscape.

Ecological Benefits

Maintenance Tips

  • Water: Very drought-tolerant once established; avoid summer irrigation in most settings.
  • Soil: Prefers lean, well-drained soils; performs poorly in rich or heavily amended beds.
  • Light: Full sun is essential for compact growth and flowering.
  • Pruning: Lightly prune after flowering to maintain shape; avoid cutting into old woody growth.
  • Lifespan: Typically short-lived (5–10 years); allow seedlings to establish to maintain presence.
  • Mulch: Use gravel or mineral mulch to keep the crown dry.
  • Wildlife note: Excellent pollinator plant; seeds may be eaten by birds but are toxic to humans and pets.
