Softstem Bulrush
Schoenoplectus tabernaemontani
Softstem Bulrush is a perennial that forms dense clumps of cylindrical, soft stems that can reach up to 8 feet in height. This aquatic plant is native to marshes, shores of lakes and streams, and other wetland areas where it stabilizes the soil and provides excellent habitat and food sources for a variety of wildlife, including birds and amphibians. During the summer months, it produces small, brown, clustered flower heads at the tips of the stems, which are not only important for seed production but also add a textural contrast to the landscape.

Maintenance Tips
- Naturally adapted to aquatic environments; ensure the planting area remains consistently wet or partially submerged.
- Generally requires minimal maintenance. Remove dead stems in late winter to early spring to maintain aesthetics and encourage healthy new growth.
- Prefers wet, muddy soils. Ideal for planting in natural ponds, constructed wetlands, and water gardens.
- Mulching is not required due to its aquatic nature.
- Check periodically for signs of disease or insect infestations, though it is typically robust and problem-free.
