Swamp Aster
Symphyotrichum puniceum
Plant Swamp Aster in your rain garden or wet spot to extend the bloom season all the way to the first frosts. This long bloomer is tall and large-flowered, with lavender flowers, red stems, and fine glossy foliage. Visited by over 100 species of insects, it provides important late-season blooms. Foliage can look tired by year's end in droughty years, so tuck behind other tall plants or cut plant to the ground after blooming. This species can get quite tall but will remain upright. Try an early-summer Chelsea chop for height control if desired.

Ecological Benefits
Maintenance Tips
- Well-established plants benefit from having the dead centers of previous years' growth cut away every few years
- Can be cut back after final blooms are done to keep tidy and prevent spread if required
- If height is a concern, cut Swamp Aster roughly in half in very early summer (the 'Chelsea Chop')
