Swamp Rose
Rosa palustris
Swamp Rose is a resilient deciduous shrub well-suited to wet habitats, growing typically 4 to 6 feet tall. Its stems are armed with sharp thorns and bear compound leaves with a glossy finish. The shrub produces clusters of striking pink flowers that are highly aromatic, drawing in bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects. After the flowers fade, they are replaced by round, red hips that persist into winter, providing food for wildlife and adding winter interest to the landscape. This rose is particularly effective planted along waterways, in naturalized wetland areas, or in rain gardens where its roots can help stabilize soil and manage water runoff.

Maintenance Tips
- Naturally adapted to wet soils; ensure adequate moisture, particularly in dryer conditions.
- Prune in late winter to early spring to remove dead or diseased wood and to maintain plant vigor.
- Prefers consistently moist, well-drained soils, thriving in clay or loam soils.
- Apply a layer of mulch to help retain soil moisture and protect roots in colder climates.
- Watch for pests such as rose sawflies and diseases like rust. Regular inspections and organic treatments can help manage these issues effectively.
