Texas Betony

Texas Betony offers a rare combination of brilliant color and shade tolerance. Slender stems rise above a leafy basal clump and carry whorls of bright red, tubular flowers, creating an airy display that can continue for months when growing conditions are favorable. The soft, lightly textured foliage adds a relaxed woodland character even between bloom cycles.

Native to the southwestern United States and Mexico, Texas Betony naturally grows along woodland edges, shaded slopes, and protected canyons. It performs beautifully beneath open tree canopies, along shaded pathways, and in borders that receive morning sun or filtered light. Hummingbirds are especially drawn to its nectar-rich flowers, while bees and other pollinators also visit throughout the extended bloom season.

Texas Betony generally grows 1–3 feet tall and gradually expands into a loose colony through underground stems. It appreciates more moisture than many desert natives but still requires well-drained soil, especially during winter. In mild climates, the foliage may remain evergreen or semi-evergreen, giving the plant value well beyond its flowering period.
