Virginia Bluebells
Mertensia virginica
Virginia Bluebells is already a familiar native plant for many, and popular for its soft, pendulous clusters of bell-shaped flowers that transition from pink buds to a striking sky-blue as they mature. This plant emerges early in spring, reaching up to 2 feet in height before its foliage fades to yellow and dies back by midsummer. It's perfect for shaded or woodland garden settings where its ephemeral beauty can be appreciated. Virginia bluebells thrive in moist, well-drained soil and are excellent for naturalizing in shady areas, under trees, or along stream banks.
