Virginia Strawberry
Fragaria virginiana
Wild Strawberry is a relative of the supermarket strawberry, and looks like a miniature version of it. Its leaves rise just a few inches off the ground, and they quickly spread as a groundcover throughout the garden, filling any gaps between taller plants and suppressing weeds. Wild Strawberry blooms in mid-spring and produces small, edible, intensely flavored strawberries in summer. The leaves turn maroon over winter rather than dying back, lending winter interest to the garden.
