Virginia Wild Rye
Elymus virginicus
The wheat-like seeds of Virginia Wild Rye feed birds and small mammals in the garden. Its gracefully arching seed heads nod in the breeze. This medium-sized grass naturally occurs in moist soils, including woodland floodplains and wet prairies, but it can also thrive in garden soils with average moisture. Virginia Wild Rye will be prominent early in the planting as it quickly grows and flowers, and gently fades out as neighboring plants get established.
