Black Sage

Black Sage is a cornerstone species of California’s coastal sage scrub and chaparral habitats. This aromatic, evergreen shrub grows 3–6 feet tall and wide, with dark, wrinkled leaves that release a pungent, spicy fragrance when brushed. In late spring to early summer, arching stems are topped with clusters of pale lavender to bluish-white flowers, creating a rich nectar source during one of the region’s driest seasons.

Ecologically, Black Sage is one of the most important nectar producers in coastal Southern California, supporting native bees, hummingbirds, butterflies, and specialist pollinators like the Variable Checkerspot. Its dense structure also offers cover and nesting habitat for birds and small wildlife.
