Soft Rush is a bold, structural native plant that brings vertical drama and texture to rain gardens, pond edges, or any consistently moist area. Often mistaken for a grass, this wetland-loving rush forms upright fountains of slender, cylindrical green stems that stay lush throughout the growing season. In early summer, it produces greenish-bronze flower clusters halfway up the stem, which gradually mature to warm tan tones, adding subtle seasonal interest.
Soft Rush plays a crucial role in stormwater management and erosion control, filtering water and stabilizing soils. Its dense growth provides excellent shelter for amphibians and aquatic insects, while its stems offer structure in habitat plantings. A true workhorse in wetland restorations and eco-conscious gardens alike.
Why Choose Soft Rush?
- Excellent for rain gardens, pond margins, and wet spots.
- Provides year-round vertical structure and texture.
- Supports wetland biodiversity and filters stormwater runoff.
- Handles standing water but tolerates average moisture once established.
Soft Rush requires consistently moist to wet soil and thrives in full sun to part shade. In optimal, saturated conditions, it may spread aggressively—monitor its growth or contain it with edging if needed. Cut back old stems in late winter to encourage fresh spring growth.
