Black Sage is a cornerstone species of California’s coastal sage scrub and chaparral habitats. This aromatic, evergreen shrub grows 3–6 feet tall and wide, with dark, wrinkled leaves that release a pungent, spicy fragrance when brushed. In late spring to early summer, arching stems are topped with clusters of pale lavender to bluish-white flowers, creating a rich nectar source during one of the region’s driest seasons.

Ecologically, Black Sage is one of the most important nectar producers in coastal Southern California, supporting native bees, hummingbirds, butterflies, and specialist pollinators like the Variable Checkerspot. Its dense structure also offers cover and nesting habitat for birds and small wildlife.

Thriving in full sun and dry, well-drained soils, this tough shrub is ideal for wildlife gardens, erosion control, and water-wise landscaping. Once established, it requires little to no supplemental irrigation and holds its own through intense summer heat.

Why Choose Black Sage?

  • One of the top native nectar producers in coastal CA.
  • Supports butterflies, hummingbirds, and specialist bees.
  • Extremely drought-tolerant once established.
  • Aromatic, evergreen foliage for year-round interest.

Shape or lightly prune in late summer or fall to maintain form and encourage fresh growth. Avoid excessive watering, especially in summer, as this can shorten its lifespan. Give it space to sprawl or lean into slopes for erosion control.
