Bluestar ‘Blue Ice’ is a compact and refined cultivar of native Amsonia, celebrated for its rich purple-blue spring blooms, lush dark green foliage, and brilliant golden fall color. Topping out at just 12–18 inches tall, this selection offers a more saturated flower color and tighter form than the straight species, making it ideal for small-space gardens, borders, or native-inspired designs that call for polish as well as ecological value.
Like other Amsonia species, ‘Blue Ice’ is deer-resistant, drought-tolerant, and loved by early-season pollinators like bumblebees and native solitary bees. Its long-lasting foliage provides structure through the summer and contributes to a striking fall display. It thrives in full sun to part shade and tolerates clay or rocky soils.
Special Note: While Bluestar ‘Blue Ice’ is a garden selection rather than a wild straight species, it retains the core ecological benefits of native Amsonia — including pollinator support, deer resistance, and adaptability to native growing conditions — making it a legitimate choice for ecologically minded gardeners who appreciate a refined form without sacrificing function.
