Allegheny Serviceberry

Amelanchier laevis

Allegheny Serviceberry, also known as Smooth Shadbush or Smooth Serviceberry, is a versatile and ornamental native plant that provides multi-season interest. It can grow up to 30 to 40 feet tall, featuring smooth, gray bark and a graceful, open branching habit that can be grown as a single trunk tree or a multi-stemmed shrub. It erupts with abundant white flowers in early spring that light up the landscape and attract pollinators. Juicy, dark purple berries follow soon after in early summer, which are enjoyed by birds and can be used in pies and jams. The foliage turns from a glossy green to bold shades of yellow, orange, and red in autumn, providing dramatic seasonal color. Allegheny Serviceberry thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained, acidic soils.

Ecological Benefits

Maintenance Tips

  • Regular watering is important in its first few years to establish a strong root system; mature plants are moderately drought-tolerant.
  • Prune in late winter or early spring to maintain shape and remove any damaged or diseased branches.
  • Performs best in slightly acidic, well-drained soil but is adaptable to many soil types.
  • Apply a layer of mulch around the base to help retain soil moisture and suppress weeds.
  • Monitor for pests and diseases, such as aphids and fire blight, managing as needed to maintain plant health.
