Alternate-Leaved Dogwood

Cornus alternifolia

Alternate-leaved Dogwood, also known as Pagoda Dogwood, is a small deciduous tree or large shrub native to North America. It typically grows 15 to 25 feet tall and is notable for its tiered, horizontal branches that give it an attractive, layered appearance. In late spring to early summer, it produces flat-topped clusters of small, creamy white flowers that attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies. These blooms are followed by dark blue berries in late summer, which are popular with birds and other wildlife. The leaves turn a vibrant red-purple in the fall, providing additional seasonal interest.

This dogwood prefers partial shade but can tolerate full sun in cooler climates if adequately watered. It is ideally suited for woodland gardens, as an understory tree, or in residential landscapes where its unique form and multi-season appeal can be appreciated.

Maintenance Tips

  • Requires evenly moist, well-drained soil; water regularly, especially during dry spells and when planted in sunnier locations.
  • Minimal pruning is needed. Prune for shape and health in late winter or early spring before new growth begins.
  • Prefers acidic to neutral, well-drained soils rich in organic matter.
  • Apply a layer of organic mulch to conserve soil moisture, regulate soil temperature, and reduce weed competition.
  • Monitor for dogwood-specific pests and diseases, such as dogwood anthracnose and borer insects. Maintain plant health to reduce vulnerability to these issues.
