American Beautyberry
Callicarpa americana
American Beautyberry may not be immediately recognized by its loose, arching branches and light green foliage; but by late summer to fall, it becomes unmistakably eye-catching with dense clusters of iridescent purple berries that punctuate its stems. These otherworldly berries last well into the winter, providing ornamental interest and offering food for birds and other wildlife when other sources are scarce. American Beautyberry typically grows 3 to 5 feet tall and wide, blooming with small, pink to lavender flowers in the summer. It thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained soil but is adaptable to a variety of conditions, including dry soils and even clay.
