Big-Leaved Aster

Eurybia macrophylla

Big-leaved aster has small, daisy-like flowers that bloom in late fall; but the real beauty of this plant is in its large, dark green leaves that are reminiscent of small Hostas. An excellent plant for shady spots, it spreads slowly to form a dense groundcover. Groundcovers sold at garden centers are often highly invasive, escaping into nearby forests and choking out native plants. The native big-leaf aster is a better groundcover choice, as it is not invasive and is naturally found in woodlands east of the Rockies.
