Blue Grama
Bouteloua gracilis
Blue Grama is a warm-season bunchgrass beloved for its wispy seedheads that look like tiny combs or eyelashes, held horizontally on slender stems. Its fine, bluish-green foliage creates a soft, low-growing mat ideal for sunny meadows, prairie restorations, or even as a native lawn alternative. Despite its delicate look, this grass is remarkably resilient, thriving in poor, dry soils with minimal maintenance once established.
Blue Grama plays an important role in supporting grassland ecosystems. Its roots help stabilize soil and prevent erosion, and its dense growth provides cover for ground-nesting bees and habitat for insects that feed grassland birds. This grass pairs beautifully with wildflowers and is deer-resistant to boot.
