About this Plant

Blue Grama is a beloved warm-season bunchgrass known for its distinctive horizontal seed heads that look like tiny combs or eyelashes floating on slender stems. Its fine, bluish-green foliage forms a soft, low-growing texture that works beautifully in sunny meadows, prairie plantings, dry borders, and native lawn alternatives.

Despite its delicate appearance, Blue Grama is remarkably tough, thriving in poor, dry soils with minimal care once established. Its roots help stabilize soil and reduce erosion, while its dense growth provides cover for insects and small wildlife. Pair it with low-growing wildflowers for a resilient, wildlife-friendly planting with subtle movement and year-round structure.

Why Choose Blue Grama?

Unique eyelash-like seed heads add charm and texture
Excellent drought tolerance once established
Useful for native lawns, meadows, and prairie restorations
Helps stabilize soil and prevent erosion
Deer-resistant and low-maintenance

Cut back or mow in late winter to early spring before new growth appears. Avoid overwatering or fertilizing, which can reduce its compact form and drought resilience.

Maintenance Tips

Cut back old growth in early spring to encourage fresh shoots.
Tolerant of drought; water only during prolonged dry periods.
Divide every few years if clumps become overcrowded or to propagate.
