Bottlebrush Buckeye
Aesculus parviflora
Bottlebrush Buckeye is a large, spreading shrub that can reach up to 8 to 12 feet in height and nearly as wide, making it an impressive addition to any landscape. It features broad, palmate leaves that provide a lush, green backdrop throughout the growing season. In mid to late summer, it produces spectacular, upright spikes of white flowers, each resembling a bottlebrush, which draw in bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Post-bloom, the flowers give way to inedible nut-like seeds. This shrub is ideal for planting in large, shaded areas, where it can spread and create a dense thicket, providing excellent cover for wildlife. It thrives in partial to full shade and prefers moist, well-drained soils.
