Brown Fox Sedge
Carex vulpinoidea
Brown Fox sedge is named for its seed heads, which resemble fox tails and spiral atop its upright stems, turning from yellow to brown as the year progresses. This sedge forms a large, mounding clump of foliage in the garden, which can flatten in midsummer but recovers in the fall. You may have seen this plant in the wild, where it commonly occurs in wet areas, making it a great choice for rain gardens.
