Coastal Plain Joe Pye Weed
Eutrochium dubium
Coastal Joe Pye Weed is a charming presence in the garden, donning six-inch domes of fuzzy pink flowers in late summer that are absolute butterfly magnets. Its upright, burgundy stems add structure to the garden. This species is rather shorter than other Joe Pye Weeds, and faces fewer issues with stems flopping over. Birds eat the seeds and use the fluffy seed material to line their nests. Thriving in wet environments, it can show signs of stress if allowed to dry out. Coastal Joe Pye weed can self-sow in the garden. Pull seedlings in spring to reduce its spread.
