Common Fox Sedge

Carex stipata

Common Fox Sedge, also known as Awl-Fruited Sedge, brings both ecological benefits and robust growth to the native planting, thriving in moist to wet environments such as wet meadows, stream banks, and rain gardens. It forms dense clumps of coarse, green leaves, reaching up to 3 feet in height. In late spring, it produces tall, spike-like seed heads that are not only interesting visually but also attract a variety of wildlife. Like many other sedges, Common Fox is particularly useful for soil stabilization and water filtration in landscape designs focused on sustainability and natural beauty.
