Common Jewelweed
Common Jewelweed, also known as Spotted Touch-Me-Not, is a resilient and highly adaptive annual that grows 2 to 5 feet tall in shaded or semi-shaded areas with moist soil. It blooms from late spring to early fall, producing lively, orange flowers with a touch of red and a distinctive, spur-like shape that attracts hummingbirds and pollinating insects. Notably, a 2024 study suggests that Common Jewelweed may have some of the most nutritionally rich pollen available. Common jewelweed is often found growing alongside streams, in wet woodlands, and in damp meadows, where it forms dense patches that can help stabilize soil and support a diverse range of wildlife.
Lore holds that the sap of Common Jewelweed can help relieve Poison Ivy symptoms; while studies support this, they also reveal common soap to be the better cure (link).

Maintenance Tips
- Prefers moist conditions; if necessary, water regularly to maintain damp soil, especially in dry weather.
- Pruning is not necessary, but plants can be cut back if they overgrow their space or to encourage bushier growth.
- Thrives in rich, moist, well-drained soil; tolerant of muddy conditions.
- Self-seeds prolifically, so manage growth as needed to balance the need for some seeding against the risk of unwanted spread.
- Generally pest-free; monitor for fungal diseases in overly damp conditions and provide adequate air circulation to prevent issues.
- A marvelous pollinator plant - don't shy away from Jewelweed just because it is an annual!
