Common Spikerush

Eleocharis palustris

Common Spikerush is a staple in wetland restoration and water-edge landscapes. It grows in dense clumps, forming a mat of slender, upright stems that can reach up to 3 feet in height. Each stem is topped with a modest, spike-like seed head that ranges in color from brown to reddish-brown. The plant’s extensive root system helps stabilize soil and prevent erosion, making it an excellent choice for naturalizing pond edges, rain gardens, and other damp environments. This hardy species can handle both shallow standing water and saturated soils, thriving in full sun to partial shade.
