Crested Oval Sedge
Carex cristatella
Crested Sedge is a charming and functional grass that thrives in wetland and woodland settings. It grows in dense clumps of fine, arching green leaves that can reach up to 2 feet in height. In late spring to early summer, it produces interesting, small, greenish-brown seed heads that rise slightly above the foliage. These seed heads have a crested appearance, giving the plant its common name. Crested sedge is ideal for naturalizing in moist areas, stabilizing soil near water bodies, and adding texture to rain gardens or other water-influenced landscapes.

- Prefers moist conditions and will tolerate wet soil, making it suitable for areas that are not well-drained.
- Minimal pruning required; cut back in early spring to remove old growth and encourage fresh foliage.
- Divide clumps in spring every few years to maintain vigor and expand your planting.
- Monitor for any signs of stress in particularly dry periods and provide additional water if necessary.
