Dark Green Bulrush

Scirpus atrovirens

Dark Green Bulrush is a hardy perennial sedge that forms dense clumps of dark green, cylindrical stems. Throughout summer, it sports small, rounded seed heads at the stem tips, which turn from green to brown as they mature. These seed heads are not only visually appealing but also provide food for wildlife. Dark Green Bulrush is particularly effective in wetland restoration projects and for stabilizing shorelines due to its vigorous growth and ability to thrive in wet, muddy soils.

Maintenance Tips

  • Cut back in late winter to early spring to remove old growth and encourage new shoots.
  • Prefers wet, muddy soils; ideal for pond edges and bog gardens.
  • Minimal maintenance required; monitor for and manage any invasive tendencies in garden settings as this can be an aggressive spreader if unchecked.
