Ditch Stonecrop
Penthorum sedoides
Ditch Stonecrop is a perennial herb well-suited to moist environments such as streambanks, wet meadows, and the edges of ponds. It typically grows 1 to 2 feet tall and sports upright, branched stems with fleshy, lance-shaped leaves that give it a succulent-like appearance. In late summer to early fall, it produces clusters of small, star-shaped flowers that are yellow to greenish-yellow. These flowers mature into reddish seed capsules that provide extended visual interest into the autumn. Ditch stonecrop is particularly valued for its ability to stabilize soil and its tolerance of fluctuating water levels, making it ideal for water gardens, wetland restoration projects, and areas that receive runoff water.
