Green Comet Milkweed
Asclepias viridiflora
Unlike the brighter floral colors seen in other milkweeds, Green Comet Milkweed gets its name from its greenish to dark purple flowers that appear in mid to late summer. Like other milkweeds, these funky blooms do nothing to reduce Green Comet Milkweed's value to pollinators, including monarchs, which use it as a host plant for their larvae. A highly adaptable plant that typically grows to a little more than a foot in height. With narrow, lance-shaped leaves, it strikes a delicate profile in the garden. Green Comet Milkweed thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained soils, making it a versatile addition to prairie gardens, naturalized areas, and as a conversation piece in diverse garden settings.

Maintenance Tips
- Drought-tolerant once established; water moderately until then, especially in very dry conditions.
- Deadhead flowers to encourage additional blooming and prevent self-seeding.
- Prefers well-drained soils but is adaptable to various soil types, from sandy to clay.
- Divide plants every few years in early spring to maintain vigor and manage spread.
- Monitor for common milkweed pests such as aphids and milkweed beetles, but be careful to manage without harming the beneficial insects that also frequent the plant, including monarch caterpillars.
